ACCOUNT OF W.G. MC-CORMICK RELATIVE TO SLIDE AT TUNNEL 7, CARRISO GORGE, MAY 9th, 1920.
I made a report to the Dispatcher and Mr. Light over telephone from Hipass, at 2:00 A.M., May 9th, that Engineer stopped on the west end of tunnel 7, stating that a number of timbers had broken while coming through and wanted to know if I wanted to examine the tunnel.
There were two Mexican tunnel watchmen at Tunnel 7 and I notified them to flag all trains and have crews examine tunnel before entering. On arrival at Hipass made the report to Dispatcher Stevens who connected the phone with Foreman Light.I advised him that the Engineer stated there were three uprights on his side that had broken and were sticking out about six or seven inches and that I did not think it was safe for trains to enter the tunnel. The Dispatcher asked Light's advise and he stated that trains could enter but he did not think it was safe.

Understand from your message that Union Oil Company would ship from San Diego to Carriso Gorge six cars of gasoline at one time pump it around tunnel into other tank cars and move six from Gorge to El Centro at one time This would mean building six car spur track on each side of tunnel which would have to be paid for by the Oil Company allowing credit for material when tracks taken up Under no circumstances can we take any chance in delaying construction work even one hour under an arrangement of this kind and spur track constructed must be far enough away on west side to assure absolute protection in every manner We could handle gasoline under regular tariff charge San Diego to El Centro even though transferred by Oil Company from one car to another at slide While we want to help Oil Company out I cannot see why it would not be to their financial advantage to move gasoline over the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific by way of Colton in preference to this arrangement. LETTER
May 10th, 1920.
San Diego and Arizona Railway out of commission until towards the end of the present week. A serious cave over tunnel No. 7 in Carriso Gorge occurred this morning and according to statement from General Manager Pontius the Railway between San Diego and El Centro will probably be out of service until towards the end of this week.
A slide on the side of the mountain about 200 feet in length occurred this morning and while the tunnel is open and trains could be passed through the same it is considered advisable not to operate trains through the tunnel until that part that has partially given away is removed and it will require several days to do the work.
The east and westbound passenger trains today were delayed and arrangements have been made to transfer the passengers by automobiles handling the entire distance between Campo and El Centro.
This is the only tunnel through the Gorge that has given trouble of any consequence. It is particularly unfortunate that this slide occurred at the present time for the reson that a great many passengers have secured Pullman reservations for their return trip the the East, as this is the season of the year that eastbound travel is the heaviest.
No freight shipments of passengers will be handled between San Diego and El Centro until this particular tunnel is made absolutely safe.

SAN DIEGO UNION NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
WILL BLOW OFF MOUNTAIN'S FACE TO STOP SLIDES ON ARIZONA LINE
Entire Slide to Be Dynamited Away to Make S. D. & A. Safe; Will Take About Five Weeks; Loss $250,000.
Blasting for the purpose of breaking up an incipient landslide at the west end of tunnel No. 7, Carriso Gorge, on the S. D. & A. railway, will completely block the line, it is announced today, for a period of about five weeks.
General Manager D. W. Pontius of the S. D. & A. returned late last night from a trip of inspection to this point, and reported that drastic engineering measures are being taken to effect a permanent remedy for the situation. A big steam shovel with a force of about 100 men is at work at the west end of the slide, while another shovel, with its crew, has been started to the gorge via Colton and El Centro to be put at work on the east side. According to Mr. Pontius, a rift in the rock formation caused the shift of a huge mass of rock and earth, bearing down on the west end of tunnel No. 7, and making it necessary to break down practically the entire side of the mountain. The completion of this tremendous task, however, will make inpossible any recurrence of the trouble, andthe engineers decided to carry it through in order to make the tunnel absolutely safe for all time. Loss to the company from the slide is, estimated at approximately $250,000, in addition to the closing down of through traffic for a period of five weeks. The four through trains have been taken off the schedule. Supt. J. R. Lowe and Asst. Chief Engineer A. J. Dubbers are at the scene of the slide, and are personally supervising the task of clearing up the threatening mass of mountain rock. The peculair rock formation of the mountain wall at this particular point is blamed for the unfortunate occurrence. This is the only place in the gorge that has given trouble of any consequence since the line was placed in operation on Dec. 1 of last year.

Mr. John D. Spreckels,

Dear Sir,
The enclosed clipping from the UNION, suggests to me a plan whereby you can probably recover considerable of the loss your Company will sustain thru the recent landslide on the S. D. & A.
While it may already have occured to you to do so, I would suggest that you can get National advertisning for your road, free, by arranging with such photoplay concerns as Pathe's and Hearst's to have their camermen present at the time of the explosion, and thus have your railroad and the way you do things in connection with it, advertised over the entire land, as this will be great new-item for these Weeklies, and if the pictures were taken, depicting the various stages of the work and then win uo with the explosion, it would make "great stuff" for the movie fans.
Permit me to offer this suggestion as a tribute to the man who has done more for San Diego than all the others combined.
Very Respectfully,
E. W. Young
(Hand written note) Thanks for suggestion think inadvisable at this time.

On advice of powder expert am planning to get well drilling outfit on job and put down 5 or 6, 6 or 8 casings to about 50 ft. deep which when shot with 30 or 40 tons of black powder we belive will remove most of slide making shovel work thereafter comparatively easy. Hand drilling started yesterday. Cannot be run deep enough because of shifting ground to get proper charge in place. Believe shots can be prepared in 10 days or two weeks. Steam shovel not necessary during that time. Will go over it with Mr. Kallright tomorrow before shovels laid off. Am working only two crews on shovels today, 4:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. LETTER
May 20, 1920.
Progress in clearing the slide in Carriso Gorge with steam shovel has been satisfactory until today when it was found impossible to place blasting powder due to loose formation of the slide. It has been necessary to find an oil well drilling outfit to sink casings for depositing blasting powder for blowing the slide from the side of the mountain into the canyon and there was not an available oil well rig in Southern California and none could be purchased from the oil well supply companies in Los Angeles.
General Manager Pontius took the matter up with Mayor L. J. Wilde, President of the Community Oil Well Company, and the Mayor quickly agreed to discontinue work on oil well No. 1 and in addition to furnishing the oil well boring outfit, has agreed to supply the necessary casing to be used in the Gorge. The arrangement is that the oil well outfit is to back at work on well No. 1 i less than two weeks.
Mayor Wilde made this concession at a sacrifice and states that it is of vital importance to the community that everything possible be done to again place the San Diego and Arizona Railway in operation so that our merchants may continue doing business with Imperial Valley as they have been doing since the San Diego and Arizona was placed in operation.
The outfit will be loaded in the morning and sent to the canyon by special train early Saturday morning. Mr. Spreckels will make another visit to the scene with special train for the purpose of observing the progress that is being made and offer suggestions as to what should be done to clear up the line.
