Museum Founder, ATSF Engineer, T. E. Durkin Passes

This photo shows our founding member Terrance Edward "Terry" Durkin at the throttle of an Amtrak train, just a few years before his retirement, flying along the coast line at his preferred speed. Fast! Note the speedometer on the left hitting the peg at 90 MPH. The passing of one of our founding members is a sad tale to have to relate to the membership but Terry Durkin personified the very essence of the organization for many years and his story needs to be told. The enormous impact of our Life Charter Member Number One on railway preservation in San Diego and Southern California is a long story to tell. It's almost indistinguishable from the details of the first twenty years of the Museum's history. One of our long time members who was with Terry in those formative years, Dick Pennick, takes the lead in this issue to memorialize not only Terry but three other important long time members who have passed away in the last few months. The losses leave us wondering who is going to fill their shoes as we struggle to bring their vision of railway preservation all the way home. That question and others are explored in this issue of the Museum newsletter.
